About Lori
Lori Wilkes is a jewelry artist who designs and creates one-of-a-kind works of wearable art in her Mount Vernon, Ohio studio.
“My jewelry is made from little clay bricks of solid colors. From there, the creative possibilities are endless. Inspiration comes from many sources—nature, antiques, fabrics, mistakes and miracles!
The most important technique that I use for making jewelry is borrowed from Venetian glass craftsmen. It’s called Millefiore, and this beautiful technique has been wonderfully photo by Stacy Wiles
adapted to polymer clay.
"When I'm designing, pattern is key. Nature's repeating textures and markings provide endless opportunities for exploration. To me, art and jewelry have always gone together. To be surrounded by art is wonderful. To wear it is even better! Unique wearables elevate everyday experience. So many times I've been told by my customers that when they put their jewelry on, it made them feel better about themselves. I think that wearing a thoughtful piece of handmade jewelry has more value to a person than mass- produced trendies made by machines."
"Lately, I've spent a lot of time thinking of works that incorporate "trash." Redeeming used up, throw away items is a great spiritual metaphor. It's these stories and ideas that keep me working into the wee hours. Pushing for something new."
Lori has worked with polymer clay for over ten years. Her work has been featured on the cover of PolymerCAFÉ 's 2007/2008 winter issue, in the spring, summer, and fall 2008, and the spring, summer, and fall 2009 issues of Belle Armoire Jewelry. Lori's work has also appeared in the October 2008 and June and October 2009 issues of Bead&Button. Look for her latest project right now in Belle Armoire Jewelry (winter 2009/2010) entitled "Neither Fish Nor Fowl." She is currently working on a book of inspirational projects. Her wearables can be found in select shops and galleries. Lori is available for workshops, and she loves receiving email at millori.art@gmail.com.
